List of Jurors
All juried exhibitions and competitions are judged by a panel that consists of at least three of the following jurors. Each panel is led by curating director Daniel Lai. Jurors are slected by Lai based on the former's curatorial visions that emphasize on aesthetic merit and originality and are devoid of personal taste.
Daniel Lai
Originally from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. He received his M.A in Art history in N.J. in 2005 and started his career as an artist in New York in 2003. Lai is the curating director of Dangenart Gallery. In less than a year, his selection of artworks has earned Dangenart Gallery the title of Nashville’s Best New Gallery (Nashville Scene, the Best of 2006) He is founder of Art at the Arcade, the only art colony in Nashville.
He is the most sought out contemporary art advocate and juror in Nashville. He is on the Arts at the Airport’s board of directors. He was invited to be on the jury panel for Cheekwood Museum of Art and Exchange Gallery. He is also on the grant review panel for Metro Arts Comission. His photography and paintings have earned him numerous nationally and internationally acclaimed awards, such as International Photography Award, Black and White Spider Award, International Stage Juried Competition, Direct Art Publication Award. His works have also been published in books and magazines.
Sisavanh Phouthavong-Houghton
Originally from Vientiane , Laos , Sisavanh Phouthavong-Houghton received her BFA from the University of Kansas in 1999. In 2003, she earned her MFA in Painting and Drawing from Southern Illinois University of Carbondale, IL with a full tuition scholarship. Phouthavong-Houghton has exhibited nationally in Maryland, Illinois, California, New York, Colorado, Missouri, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and internationally in Canada and New Zealand. Her credits include solo shows in Alabama and Illinois, and juried shows nationwide.
She is an Assistant Professor of Studio Arts in Painting at Middle Tennessee State University . In 2004 and 2006, she was awarded grants from the college in Faculty Research and Creative Activity, and in Faculty Curriculum Development.
John Schramlin
Schramlin, an award winning artist, has received accolades from the press for his curatorial vision. As a guest curator for Dangenart Gallery, Schramlin envisioned a series of shows called “Evolution,” in which the artwork is transformed during the duration of the exhibition. Nashville Scene writer Joe Nolan describes the show “Evolution 2” as “a glimpse of how an artist realizes a vision and also a recontextualization of practice and craft into the spotlight of performance.”
John received a BFA in studio art (major in painting with a minor in graphic Design) from Middle Tennessee State University in May of 2005. He is currently showing his work in the middle Tennessee area and is curating at Dangenart Gallery in Nashville, TN.
Andee Rudloff
Since 2005, Rudloff has served as Curator for Arts at the Airport at Nashville International Airport. Rudloff is an active arts organizer in the Nashville and Bowling Green areas. In 2006 she acted as the Chairperson and coordinator of the Bowling Green International Festival Mask Exhibition. She is a member of At Home on Tour with Professor John Warren Oaks.
Andee Rudloff received her MFA from the University of South Florida in 1993 with academic honors. A painter, her recent exhibition history includes a solo exhibition at Capital Arts Alliance in Bowling Green , Kentucky , and the Alterscape Juried Exhibition in Knoxville , TN. She participated in such invitational exhibits as “Sugar and Spice” at Twist Gallery and EARTHworks Invitational Exhibition, both in Nashville . Rudloff is an accomplished public artist, having painted murals for the Bowling Green Chamber of Commerce, HCA Regional Hospital Birthing Center, and many other public organizations.
Lain York
Lain York is an instrumental figure in the development of the arts in Nashville. York is the Gallery Director for Zeitgeist Gallery, and a board member of Fugitive Projects. Art critic David Maddox describes York as “Mayor of the Art World”. In a 2006 Nashville Scene article, Maddox writes, “Anyone trying to get something going in the Nashville art world at some point (the earlier the better) makes a pilgrimage to consult with Lain York, presiding at his desk in the front of Zeitgeist Gallery.”
York is a working artist with a wide exhibition history. He has had solo shows at Cheekwood Museum and the University of Alabama , Huntsville . York ’s work was included in “The Fragile Species” exhibition at the Frist Center for the Visual Arts. He received his BA from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville in 1990.
Rocky Horton
Rocky Horton is Assistant Professor of Art at Lipscomb University in
Nashville Tennessee. He received his Bachelor of Science Degree form
Harding University in Searcy Arkansas. Then, after a two year stint as an
English teacher in Italy, he continued his education in the graduate program
at West Virginia University where he received his M.F.A. In studio art in
2003. He actively makes and exhibits work nationally. He has adjudicated
several high school, college, and professional level exhibitions. He has
participated in panel discussions and conference presentations. Most
recently he has been awarded an independent research grant from Lipscomb
University.
Tarri Driver
Driver is the recipient of multiple awards from the Amity Foundation Invitational Portfolio Exchange. Her exhibition history includes the W.O. Benjamin Fine Arts Gallery in Fulton, Mississippi, the Keathly University Center in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, and the Mark English Fine Arts Gallery, in Franklin, Tennessee. A testament to the cutting-edge nature of Driver’s work is her participation in alternative and experimental shows, such as Salon D6 in Murfreesboro, TN, and the Outside Art Community show in Louisville, KY.
Charles Clary
Clary was the recipient of the Virginia Bellamy Memorial Award in the 2003 Morristown Art Association Juried Show, and has earned many other awards of merit in juried shows. His exhibition credits include the Appalachian Art Show in Kingsport, Tennessee, and the Rotunda Gallery in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Clary’s artwork has been featured in promotional materials for PBS, and in magazines such as Collage Magazine and the Murfreesboro publication The Pulse.
